For those of you who know me, you know how much I love birthdays...especially my own :) Drew is not overly big on birthdays, but he did a great job of wrangling our friends for a fun, very early birthday celebration for me last night.
We had 14 of our friends meet us for dinner at Dos Amigos Mexican Restaurant just down the road in Mission Bay on Saturday night. They had a real Christmas tree and everything--it actually smelled like Christmas! We all got yummy food and margaritas and had a wonderful time. It's kind of funny that the first time I ever ate at that restaurant was for my birthday lunch with Tally last year--talk about full circle :)
It was really nice to have (almost) all of our friends together in one place to enjoy good food, good conversation and actually really good weather! Some new friends, Grant & Jenny, joined us as well--they are a Kiwi couple that we met through our US friends, Kurt & Haley, when they were here last month.
After dinner, the resident mariachi band came by to sing me happy birthday and they were fully-equipped with a good, ol' sombrero for me to wear.
My sweet friend, Kristen, made me a homemade chocolate cake with homemade cream cheese frosting and fresh strawberries on top. I made a good wish, but I can't tell you what it was!
After we were all finished, we all walked back to our place for a few drinks on the rooftop. We didn't have much daylight left by the time we got back, but it was still a nice way to finish off the evening.
Except that we didn't stop the fun there...once it got too dark to sit upstairs, we moved back into our place for the inaugural game of Cards Against Humanity. OH. MY. GOSH. I can definitively say that this game is most definitely not for everyone, but it was freaking hilarious. If you're not familiar, you can read about it here. It's pretty much just a perverted, twisted, vulgar, offensive version of Apples to Apples, but when you're among friends it's the perfect game to play! We had so much fun that our guests stayed until almost midnight! I know...we're wild!
Anyway--it was a very fun night and my only wish is that the few friends who couldn't make it would have been there! But nights like that always remind me of how grateful I am for the friendships I've made here.
Today, we had a cookout to celebrate our friend, JC, graduating from his master's program here in Auckland. Even though the rain threatened most of the day, we got to sit outside, grill out some yummy food, pop some bubbly and relax in the giant outdoor hot tub. Not a bad way to spend a December Sunday!
Hard to believe we only have 5 full days left in New Zealand this year before we head off for the States!
