As most of you know, we started the process of House Hunters International in March 2012 when we first found out we were moving to New Zealand. It was at that point we learned that the whole thing was a sham and they would do nothing to actually help us find an apartment in Auckland. They told us we would find a place on our own and then contact them with the details and they would decide at that point if we would make a good episode.
Last summer before we left, we had to film a 2-minute video to submit to them so they could see how we were on camera...and, no, I will not be including that for you to see because it was pretty embarrassing!
Fast forward to September 2012..........we were all setting into our tiny apartment here in NZ and I started communicating with Peggy (the producer) again. I sent her all the details of our apartment, had to fill out several more applications and questionnaires and then do a phone interview with her to discuss various events and experiences we had had in our short time here that might make for good TV.
Then, about a month later she emailed to let us know that we had officially been selected and that we would have to figure out a filming schedule. It was a constant back and forth, but we determined that we would film our back story (aka the part of the show where we're still in Raleigh 'before' our move) in December when we planned to come home for Christmas. We filmed for about 8 hours starting at 8am the morning after our trans-continental flight...not our brightest idea. After that, we planned to film the rest of the house hunting the third weekend in January here in Auckland.
Just before going home, we met with a man named Wayne who would be our 'realtor' during our house hunting in NZ. He was very nice with an awesome kiwi accent and an awesome personality. We had to fill him in on everything about the show and how it worked...and the best part was that he does absolutely nothing with rental properties and specializes in multi-million-dollar homes--that would've been our next choice ;)
So, even though we had high hopes that HGTV would actually be finding us a house, it was a fun process and something very cool to look back on for years to come. I have lots of pictures from our filming weekend here that I will post after the episode airs so I don't give away TOO much!
