Fun Facts-Vol. 3

Time for another little dose of kiwi culture!

1) As seen above, McDonald's restaurants here have started serving LAMB burgers! Trust me, this was not my lunch, but I was told that it was actually quite good. How do you think this would go over in the States??

2) There's really no such thing as waiter service--at least not to the full extent that we're used to. They have people who will seat you and take your order, but once they bring you your food they're pretty much gone. Supposedly they do this because it's considered rude to interrupt your meal. Also, you very rarely pay the server...you normally just walk up to the front cash register and tell them what you ate and pay there. No tips are required.

3) You are required to go read your own power meter every month and then call the energy company and let them know your reading. Then they generate your bill and send it to you to be paid.

4) Stores really don't like to let you return things--it's almost seen as an insult of sorts. Most stores will give you a store credit if you bring something back, but it very rare to find a store that will actually give you your money back.

5) While they do have 'EXIT' signs, a lot of their signage...especially in parking garages and public spaces...says 'WAY OUT' instead. It always makes me smile :)

6) Tim Tams are a very popular sweet treat...or 'biscuit'...that kiwis like to enjoy with tea and coffee. It's a mixture between a cookie of sorts and a homemade Kit-Kat. They come in all sorts of flavors, but I have to say the caramel is my favorite!

7) The cost of gym memberships is astronomical! Normally back home a gym membership would be considered expensive if it was more like $40 a month for an individual. Here...try $35-$40 A WEEK for a gym membership! It's a hard pill to swallow for people like us (who don't like working out very much) to spend almost $150 a month each on a gym. There are other workout facilities and things like yoga studios, but classes at private places like that are about $20 each. Guess we'll just have to eat healthier and try to walk as much as possible :)

That's all for now, but I'm keeping a list and taking notes whenever I can. More coming soon...

Cheers!
